Do you know how dangerous my baby's plastic toys are?

Toys made of plastic cannot avoid chemical treatment in the manufacturing process. Mainly made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride), which is one of the most used plastics. PVC has a long lifespan, has excellent durability, chemical resistance, and insulation. It is also the main material for children's toys as well as various household items and interior construction materials.

Since many of our baby’s toys are mainly made of plastic, how safe do we think they are for our babies?

Let’s talk about that three most harmful ingredients in our baby’s toys : Phthalate, lead, and BPA.

Q: Phthalate, what is it?

A : Phthalates are organic chemicals manufactured from petroleum. It has been used since 1930 as a chemical additive to soften plastics, especially PVC. It is widely used in the production of items necessary for everyday life, such as toys, various PVC products, wood processing, and home flooring. However, long-term exposure to phthalates as harmful chemicals affects the endocrine system and adversely affects reproduction and growth.

It can affect the liver, heart, kidneys and lungs, and can cause a decrease in sperm concentration and quality, sperm count in boys, and DNA damage in the sperm. Hormonal imbalance can also cause ovarian deformities in girls.

Q: Lead. How dangerous is it?

A : Currently, heavy metals are often found in children's toys as well as children's clothing. In particular, heavy metals such as lead and barium are a problem because they can be found in many paints that decorate children’s toys. When children put these toys in their mouths, the body absorbs the lead as if they were to eat the pieces of paints that have fallen.

Like Phthalate, it affects fertility, can cause anemia or nervous system dermatitis. High levels of absorbed lead can reduce the baby’s appetite and put them at risk of ADHD.

Studies have also found that having above average blood lead levels results in shorter stature and higher cholesterol levels.

Q: What is Bisphenol A (BPA)?

A : BPA is an industrial chemical added to many products, including food containers and household products. BPA is considered an environmental toxin.

Bisphenol A is known to permeate into food or beverages contained in containers that contain bisphenol A. That bisphenol A permeate into our body, and act as an endocrine system (Hormonal) disruptor. It can adversely affect the brains of infants and fetuses. It is a substance that continues to be a subject of concern and controversy due to its association with type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity.

Plastic has made human life very rich and convenient, but it has two sides that can cause great harm if misused. Therefore, there is only one way for users to choose safe and harmless products wisely.
